Our Kayaks

The Canton Kayak Club (CKC) makes kayaking accessible to many who live and work around central Maryland. Offering a seasonal kayak share program to members, CKC fits in-between renting kayaks and owning kayaks.

About Kayaking

With more than 120 kayaks dispersed throughout our 10 dock locations around central Maryland, you are likely to discover the perfect fit to get out paddling regularly. Canton Kayak Club gear is high quality and designed to last.

For each location, racks are positioned close to the water’s edge and kayaks are stored lower to the ground for ease of member access. Most locations have 8-10 kayaks to support group outings, while some have over 20 to support orientation training and a group outing simultaneously.

Types of Kayaks

For each location, our fleet is a mix of sit-in (recreational and touring) and sit-on (fishing) kayaks. Members can try different kayaks and decide which best fits their needs.

Sit-In / Recreational

Recreational kayaks are shorter (from 11’), wider and so tend to be slower. They feel more stable and will usually seem more maneuverable, especially to a new paddler.

Sit-In /Touring

Touring kayaks are longer (up to 18’), narrower (20” cockpit) and tend to move faster. They are better suited to open, rougher water, and may feel less stable to a new paddler.

Sit-On / Tandem / Fishing

We also offer sit-on-top kayaks, which are highly stable, but heavier (50+ lbs). These include fishing kayaks and sit-on-top tandem kayaks (two-seaters) and are available at a couple of our docks.

Are you very tall?

Disclaimer: The club offers a variety of kayaks at each location to make kayaking accessible to a wide variety of body types. However, most kayaks are designed for people under 6’6’ tall and less than 275 pounds. Paddlers must be able to easily enter and exit the cockpit of a kayak with legs straight; the cockpits on most of our kayaks are 17-20 inches wide.

Availability of Kayaks

At each location, life jackets come in both men’s and women’s styles with sizes ranging from S-XXL. However, returning members often decide to purchase their own life jackets for comfort and convenience.

Kayaks are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and are only reserved for paddle pals.
