Essex Island View
Since we opened here, late in our 2009 season, this has become one of our most popular locations. At this location, members have access to the open waters of the Chesapeake Bay, as well as the Middle and Back River tributaries, and can also explore Hart Miller Island! We recommend that trips out to Hart Miller be undertaken only by our more experienced paddlers. If you are less experienced, we recommend that when leaving the Island View launch you go LEFT and stay against the shoreline. By taking this route there are plenty of beautiful, calm bay coves to explore without the open bay conditions.
This location is also home to the CKC's sit-on-top kayaks, including two boats designed for fishing and a tandem (two-seat) boat.
The Island View now has kayaks available for rent! This makes it an ideal place for CKC members to take non-member friends kayaking--members can use our kayaks while non-members rent. Please note that kayak rental is managed by the restaurant, not by the CKC, and uses kayaks owned by the restaurant. The CKC kayaks may be used by CKC members only.
We are implementing a 'Kayak Usage Log Book' to be used for member safety at the Island View Waterfront Cafe Dock. Members MUST sign-out kayaks by stating your trip details, date and time when you leave, your anticipated return, and your contact info. The Log Book can be found in a wooden box on the kayak rack--you can't miss it.
And after paddling, be sure to stop in at the Island View for a meal or a beverage! The food is great (their crab pretzel and "Mixed-Up Crab Soup" are known far and wide, and their crab cakes appeared in Maryland Public Television's "Eating Crab Cakes: the Best I Ever Had"), the atmosphere is comfortable and casual, the staff is friendly, and it's a popular spot for kayakers from around the Baltimore area, so you may meet other paddlers while you're there!
