The CKC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing Baltimore-area residents with a convenient and inexpensive way to learn and enjoy the sport of kayaking. Since the club was founded in 1999, we've grown to over 500 members. We're unique in that we don't require any prior kayaking experience. In fact, you don't even have to own a kayak! If you have the desire to get out on the water, we can provide everything you need to make it happen! MORE►
Here's How It Works
Members join for the duration of the current season. See our Join or Renew page for current membership rates. Our season runs approximately May through October, with the precise opening and closing dates determined, for safety reasons, by water temperature and weather conditions. All new members complete a basic, "Quick Start" training class, taught by American Canoe Association-certified instructors, during which they learn the basic skills they need to get out on the water. The cost of the class is included in the membership fee. After training, members are given access to our fleet of more than 80 kayaks, as well as our supply of paddles and life vests, spread among six different waterfront locations in Baltimore City and Baltimore County. Members can paddle as often as they like, at any location, without making reservations, and with no per-use charge. It's as simple as that!
Members may choose to participate in scheduled group outings throughout our six-month season. Our on-line forum, and our monthy Happy Hours at various locations, provide opportunities to meet other members and make new paddling partners. Members may also choose to attend additional training classes to improve upon the skills learned in their initial training. Even if you're a more experienced paddler, with your own kayak, the CKC can help you get out on the water more often by eliminating the hassle of loading and unloading your kayak on those occasions when time is limited. After work on a Wednesday? Before breakfast on Saturday? Our kayaks are ready and waiting, right by the water!
Members must be at least 18 years of age. Please see our Club Rules page for specific rules governing paddling times.
Please note that many of our kayaks have a recommended weight limit of 275 pounds or less. We cannot guarantee that all locations have kayaks with a weight limit greater than 260 pounds. Paddlers must be able to easily enter and exit the cockpit of a kayak; the cockpits on most of our kayaks are 17-20 inches wide.
